Day Four

Woke up at 8:00am, got washed and had breakfast at 8:30am. I departed the hostel at 9:20am, the weather was overcast with light rain. I popped in the Rosethwaite store for a O.S. map 1:25 000 for the Patterdale area costing me £4.00. I set off to Stonethwaite and onto the stony path to lead me to Lining Crag. There was plenty of water flowing from the fells and low clouds lining the top of the fells. I slowly ascended up to the gill to reach Lining Crag, here there were people laying down slabs for the upkeep of path, which does help with footing.

On Greenup Edge, it was very boggy and misty. I had to take a compass bearing for Easedale and once I spotted the boundary fence I was on route. As I descended I slipped on some wet peat and went down on my behind, giving me a cold wet soaking, at least it was a soft landing. Here I decided to get the gas stove out and brew up a cup of coffee and had a sandwich from the packed lunch I ordered from the hostel.

I pushed onto Grasmere and got some crisps, mars bar and a can of pop, I sat on a bench and fed the Jackdaws, Sparrows and Chaffinch, which were very tame. I set again along the A591 to the start of a climb “The Tongue” to the top for Grisdale Tarn, this is very steep in places. The higher I climbed the thicker the cloud mist got.

I have now walked 40 miles and another 150 miles to go. I couldn’t see the top for the mist, which was really thick and nasty in the wind. I reached the broken down wall to take me to the tarn, here there was some people camping along the edge of the tarn.

I descended down the Grisedale valley, where the weather improved and reached Patterdale by mid-afternoon. I booked into Side Farm costing me £1.50, later on in the evening, it started to rain again. This was to get very heavy and continued into the night.
