Coast to Coast 1991

Me, at Haweswater
It rained all night and into the early hours, but slept ok in the tent. It reminded of the Pennine Way back in 1971, when I had heavy rain in Horton in Ribblesdale, happy days. The rain had eased off by 8:30am, after I had packed up, I decided to pop in the café in Patterdale for a breakfast. It was rubbish, when I did the Coast to Coast in 1992 on a East to West crossing, this café was closed. I went to the post-office for a packed lunch and got a new pair of walking socks for a spare set.
From Patterdale, I started to climb for Boardale Hause. Here there was plenty of walker’s about, as well as plenty of paths going off in all directions. I decided to take a compass bearing to be on the safe side and soon reached the shoulder of the Knott. The peat-bogs weren’t too bad, but did slow me up in some places. I slowly approached the High Street and turned left to Kidsty Pike where the views were very good all around. I rested here for a while and took some photographs and chatted to a couple who were walking a section of the High Street. Later I descended down the steep slope to take me to the Randale Beck, here I had a lunch-stop. The Chaffinch’s were very tame and I was feeding them on bits of my sandwich. I set off along the bland shore path of Haweswater to Burnbanks, then through pretty field-paths to Shap Abbey and Shap. I was booked in at The Crown Inn.
