Coast to Coast 1991

The Crown, Shap
Got up 7:30am, had breakfast at 8:00am. This was a full English breakfast, which the landlord of the Crown served it and very enjoyable it was too. I got packed and popped into the local shop for some foot spray as my feet were getting a bit sore, also had to send a parcel of used clothing to home. I departed Shap about 10:00am and walked up the lane, through some fields to the footbridge over the M6. I crossed the bridge to continue on a well defined path, with large granite boulders scattered every where. This led me to the Nab and the quarry. This was very dry and dusty, I crossed over a well made wooden footbridge.
I approached Oddendale, a group of houses for the estate workers. I headed south to a place called Pottrigg, a lonely barn amongst a tree enclosure. I took a compass bearing going East over limestone pavements, the weather is now getting warm. There was low flying jets which was good to watch, although a bit noisy. I headed to a dry valley and walked to a cairn called Robin Hood’s Grave, why call this I don’t know. I returned to the main path to head for another dry valley taking me to a road junction and descended to Orton.. Here I stopped for lunch and found a bench to sit on. This Black cat came along and must of smelled my Tuna sandwich, anyway I gave it a bit. Afterwards, I popped into the George for a drink. I spent half hour in there and continued on the road for 4 miles, to take me to Sunbiggin Tarn.
I stood here to see where the original route Wainwright would of trodden along. It looked much better than the road walking. I crossed along the shore line of the tarn and the birds were making a bit of a noise. I crossed over to what looked like a barrow, which had a lot of loose stones on it. I crossed over the moor to a cattle grid. Then a short walk over fields to my next bed and breakfast - Bent’s Farm.
