Coast to Coast 1991

The Mill Stone
Today I will be heading for Keld and after a good breakfast from Mrs.Ousby, I packed the gear and got ready for the off. I departed Bent’s Farm about 9:15am and walked along good field paths to reach Smardale Bridge, passing interesting lime kilns.
I saw where the Tebay to Kirkby Stephen ran along the via-duct. The paths were good to Kirkby Stephen, where I spend a good hour. In that time I went to the Coast to Coast chip shop and had Fish and Chips, which was very nice. Then later on did some shopping for some camping supplies.
I continued to Hartley via Frank’s Bridge with a drag up the road, soon I got to the start of some peat-hagging for Nine Standards. After going across the hags, I soon reached the Nine Standards and was a bit breezy and cool. I took a couple of photos and continued along to White Mossy Hill, Mill Stones and Ney Gill. Here is a shooting hut, I popped in and wrote my name in the house-book. I sat here for 15 minutes and had a bite from my packed lunch and thinking how pleased I was reaching this far and how lucky I’ve been with the weather, apart from Patterdale.
The ruck sac was no problem and my feet were ok, but left ankle was aching a bit. I reached Keld by 4:30pm and set up camp at Park Lodge, where I had the top field. It was lovely and peaceful in the sunshine and campsite only cost me £1.
